But I’m not sure if I agree with that because I know if your not having a flare up when they do a colonoscopy that it won’t show anything. But regardless I have a couple symptoms that I’m not sure what they mean, like half the time or more just thinking about, looking at or even smelling some foods just make me instantly sick and I’ll be in the bathroom all day, what could cause this? Is this a normal side affect for those with INS? Is it possible that I have something else? Please help me thank you.

I have suffered from it for several years now. I’m still trying to work out my triggers. I’ve been caught several times out shopping, after having had a meal in a restaurant, and have soiled myself, much to my extreme embarrassment. I normally have to race home and totally clean up. Triggers do seem to be coffee, salad dressings, some spicy foods, and anything rich in the meal it self. Even having salmon out at a restaurant, depending on what spices are put on the fish, can cause me to have sudden diarrhea. Sometimes I have about five seconds warning and in the effort of running to the bathroom, everything is over, and I have to get home immediately to shower and change. Stomach pains brief, the warning is even briefer, any any attempt to move to get to a bathroom can be futile. I now try not to eat at all when I am out with others as the accidents have been many. Is this IBD-S.

I just want to mention that I had a lot of the similar problems and after getting off the birth control pill I’m starting to feel better. I’m my case I think it was estrogen dominance and food allergies. I have celiac wich a lot of times comes with hashimoto and take hydroxyzine for anxiety. Good luck I hope you find some answers!

Hi Alyson – thanks for commenting! Sorry to hear your diet is so restricted by diverticulitis. SCD has helped hundred and hundreds of people who struggle with diverticulitis enjoy a wider variety of foods. You can learn more about it and get started for free here: https://healthygut.com/scd-quick-start-guide/

However i am surprised you havent mentioned diverticulitis . This is far more common than many people realise and if you have it alongside IBS like I do your diet can be radically restricted. I cannot eat any processed foods , no red meat , no dairy , no fruit and very few vegetables. This is the only way to prevent the chronic pain and diarrhoea that has plagued me for years. But I am concerned about the affect this lack of dietary variety may be having on my overall health. My doctor has no interest in discussing this with me.

Learning I had low stomach acid and supplementing with Betaine HCl made a significant difference.started with six tablets per meal and I’m now down to one. I cannot do dairy so the SCD yogurt not a good idea for me. Happily I found a recipe for coconut yogurt that I make in an Insta pot pressure cooker. It’s so easy, takes eight hours and no additives. Recipe from Against All Grains by Danielle Walker. Ck out her website; probably there.

Hi Deb – I’m sorry to hear what you’re going through.

The SCD diet has helped many people with these symptoms – and it is suitable for those with diabetes (always go over diet changes with your doc, though!)

The best place to start is with our free quick start guide here: https://healthygut.com/scd-quick-start-guide/

Hi Julie – it sounds like you were experiencing some symptoms of die-off (also called a Herx reaction) after changing your diet. This is totally normal and actually a good sign. Unfortunately, adding grains in probably made you feel worse.

We would encourage you to start over the Intro Diet for 2-5 days and then progress through the phases. One thing you can do to feel better during die-off (usually lasts no longer than 5 days) is take epsom salt baths: https://healthygut.com/how-to-take-epic-epsom-salt-baths/

I hadn’t pin pointed it to anything specific I ate but knew it was worse if I ate raw food such as salads. An ultrasound showed an inflamed duodenum and the doctor believes I may have strictures/adhesions in my transverse colon but this is not confirmed since I have not had and endo/colonoscopy. Many, many years ago I was diagnosed with IBS-D but rarely had issues and have had normal daily BMs prior to this diet. By day 3 thru 5 of starting the intro diet I had explosive diarrhea with chills and cramping (flashback to IBS-D). I immediately added a bit of grain to help firm up stools and now the pain is back to where I started at before the diet. In addition, it now feels like I have pills stuck in my throat and the pain has now radiated down to my chest. Quite uncomfortable but I’m assuming this is heartburn. I drink Aloe every evening. I have tried peppermint pills but they made acid reflux worse. Has anyone else experienced any of these symptoms after starting the diet and what worked for you?

Hi Randy,
I have been following the SCD guys for many years now probably before they started making money with programs etc. They were naturally alot more informative back then building a client base. So you may find more information by doing more searching of older articles.
You understand that they probably can’t offer complex medical advice over digital chat.
But with the kind of lifestyle you probably have I’m sure the SCD guys would have agreed in the past that taking digestive enzymes with you overseas is an excellent start for anyone wanting to start feeling benefits right away. They used to recommend Thorne Research Dipan-9. I get it from iherb.com. Not sure if they still do.
Also, if your stomach can handle it, Betaine with Pepsin. The SCD guys used to recommend this as a supplement you could try today and would most likely feel better on. They had an article about why we might need it and how to work out how much you need. This also another supplement that travels well. It would help kill parasites at entry point that you may be exposed to.
Also, I used to be a paramedic and had a bit of PTSD which certainly exacerbate gut problems. Google EFT for veterans. Something free and easy for you to do while overseas.
Good luck. There’s no shame in chasing the perfect poo!
Belinda

Hi Alice – we definitely suggest talking to your doctor, but stress is a HUGE trigger for diarrhea. If you can’t change your job right now, maybe there are some other ways you can reduce your stress – like trying a new work management technique. Hi jan – thanks for reaching out!

Developing intolerances to new foods in a sign of leaky gut – this is because undigested food particles get into the bloodstream through faulty tight junctions in the gut and cause an inflammatory response.

You can typically reverse these intolerances by healing the gut. You can learn a LOT more at our free webinar on how to heal a leaky gut here: http://solvingleakygut.com/webinar/live-qva/

I eat a low carb diet and used nuts a lot, from flour, butters, nut milks and just plain nuts. I am doing better now but every now and then i have a flare up. My question is what else could be in this category besides nuts? I have stayed away from most seeds too but I don’t know if they they would affect me or not, too afraid to willing eat something that might affect me.

I just read an article about preservatives and how they are causing many food intolerences in people. We have to be on the lookout all the time, it can be a specific food or it can be the additives that are added in, more and more of our foods are being altered and we don’t know what they are doing to our bodies.

Nine years ago I suffered from 6 mo of violent diarrhea. I had every test. Nothing helped. I started the SCD diet( from book Breaking the Vicious Cycle) my diarrhea stopped after 3 days. I ate strict SDC for one year. I bought Trader Joes plain Greek yogurt instead of making my own. I took the vitamins and probiotics recommended in the book. I never cheated. After the intro diet I introduced foods gradually . Most veggies and fruits were cooked well . Nuts, beans and raw veggies were added at the end.
I have given the book/ diet to many people.
If you’re sick of your IBS-D please try this. It really works!
PS after eating SDC for one year, I slowly added forbidden foods. I eat normally now.

Hi Sheila

Have you been to see a gastroenterologist.

The symptoms sound awful but pretty familiar. My son has Ulcerative Colitis and was also diagnosed with IBS yesterday. I see what it is doing to him and even though I cannot say I know what you are going through, I can say that I empathise with you.

There are some great herbal remedies for how you are feeling, try this one as it has had some great reviews:

http://www.iherb.com/product-reviews/Heather-s-Tummy-Care-Peppermint-Oil-Intense-Bowel-Soothing-90-Enteric-Coated-Softgels/16498/?p=1

I hope you feel better soon.

PS Does anyone have any advice on what my son can eat now. These are what have already been excluded due to the Ulcerative Colitis:

White wheats (bread) – apparently he will not be able to eat brown bread anymore either????
All leafy green vegetables
Onions
Dairy (he does eat cheese though)
Oil and fatty foods
Pork (his own choice)
All processed foods
Nuts
There are many other foods that he is unable to eat but I do not wish to bore everyone.

Shelia – I’m so sorry to hear what you’re going through right now. I know you are nit alone if that feeling of being hungry but afraid to eat for how your body will react. It is miserable.

We recommend you start on the Intro diet of SCD right away. It isn’t enough to just eat the SCD legal food – following the intro diet and phases gives your stomach time to rest and heal so it can digest more foods easily.

This is how to get started: https://healthygut.com/scd-quick-start-guide/

THE LAST MEAL, AND I DO MEAN MEAL THAT I ATE WAS ON NEW YEARS DAY WITH MY FAMILY AT MY HOUSE BECAUSE I’M AFRAID TO GO OUT ANYWHERE! SURE ENOUGH AFTER EATING I TOOK MY GRANDSON AND WENT TO THE RECLINER TO ROCK HIM TO SLEEP, WITHIN I WOULD SAY 20 MINUTES MY DAUGHTER COULD ACTUALLY HEAR MY STOMACH FROM 10 FEET AWAY, BUT SHE COULD ALSO SEE THE PAIN ON MY FACE!
I HAD TO HAND OFF HER SON AND RUN FOR THE BATHROOM, HOW EMBARRASSING FOR ME BECAUSE I HAVE VIOLENT DIARRHEA ATTACKS AND IT’S NOT HARD STOOLS IT’S AS IF I’VE TAKEN LAXATIVES, GOD ONLY KNOWS I DON’T NEED THOSE!
I HAVE NAUSEA AND SEVERE PAIN TO WHICH I TAKE PHENEGRAN FOR, PLUS I WAS TAKING LOMITIL FOR THE DIARRHEA, BUT AFTER ADJUSTING SEVERAL TIMES AND GETTING TO THE POINT TO WHERE I WAS TAKING 4 AT A TIME AND THEY WEREN’T DOING ANY GOOD AT ALL, I STOPPED TAKING THEM!!!!

I HAVE 2 HIATAL HERNIA’S, ONE ON EACH SIDE JUST UNDER MY RIB-CAGE, I’VE HAD SINCE MY 20’S AND WHEN ONE OF THEM DECIDES TO POP OUT, WELL IT FEELS LIKE I’M HAVING A HEART ATTACK!! I CAN’T BREATH AND THE PAIN IS UNBEARABLE AND IT STARTS CRAWLING UPWARDS TOWARDS MY ESOPHAGUS! I HAVE TO TAKE MY HAND AND PRESS HARD ON IT TO TRY AND PUSH IT BACK DOWN AT THE SAME TIME WHILE TRYING TO RELAX SO IT WILL GO BACK INTO PLACE! I CAN BE LAYING ON MY SIDE WITH MY HEAD IN MY HAND AND IT WILL HIT ME, BUT YET THEY HAVE NEVER DONE ANYTHING ABOUT IT!!!
I’LL BE 56 YEARS OLD THIS YEAR AND THEY STILL LET ME SUFFER FROM THIS, PLUS AN UMBILICAL HERNIA THAT PAINS ME! SEEMS TO ME THEY COULD HAVE FIXED THIS PROBLEM A LONG TIME AGO!
NOW MY DOCTOR IS SENDING ME TO A SPECIALIST, “JUST TO TALK TO HIM,” TO SEE IF I NEED AN ENDOSCOPY AND A COLONOSCOPY TO SEE IF I HAVE CROHN’S DISEASE, BECAUSE IT RUNS IN MY FAMILY!!
THE PAIN THAT I HAVE IS INTOLERABLE, I’M STARVING AND I WANT TO EAT, BUT I’M AFRAID TO! I LOVE FOOD AND I LOVE TO EAT, I’M NOT OVERWEIGHT, I EAT RIGHT, DRINK PLENTY OF WATER, NO SODA’S TEA OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT… BUT I DO HAVE MY 3 CUPS OF COFFEE IN THE MORNING AND I LOVE MY VEGGIES, FRUITS, BAKED, GRILLED OR BROILED MEATS, AND I DON’T REMEMBER THE LAST TIME I’VE HAD RED MEAT!!!
I’M OCD, AND WASH EVERYTHING REALLY WELL BEFORE COOKING IT! I KEEP ALL OF MY CUTTING BOARDS SEPARATE, AND WASH THEM IN THE DISHWASHER, OTHER THAN MY WOODEN ONES THAT I WASH BY HAND WITH REALLY HOT SOAPY WATER AND RINSE REALLY WELL! BUT I “DON’T USE THEM FOR MEATS OF ANY KIND”!!!!

MY DOCTOR SAYS THAT I’M DOING EVERYTHING RIGHT, BUT YET I’M LOSING WEIGHT BECAUSE OF THE DIARRHEA AND NOT BEING ABLE TO EAT! I’M JUST HOPING AND PRAYING THAT SOMEONE CAN GIVE ME SOME ANSWERS SOON, BEFORE IT’S TO LATE!!! I’VE ALWAYS BEEN ABLE TO EAT ANYTHING, AND I DO MEAN ANYTHING, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF LIVER AND JUST A COUPLE OF OTHER THINGS I DON’T LIKE, BUT I THINK YOU GET MY MEANING!
SOME YEARS AGO I FOUND MYSELF TO BE LACTOSE INTOLERANT!!!!!!! THAT WAS A VERY BIG SURPRISE TO ME BECAUSE I’VE NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH DAIRY PRODUCTS! I SWITCHED TO LACTOSE FREE MILK, NOW I CAN’T EVEN LOOK AT IT WITHOUT MY STOMACH HURTING, OR CHEESE, I CAN’T EVEN THINK OF FOOD PERIOD WITHOUT MY STOMACH GOING INTO KNOTS AND IT STARTS TO HURT LIKE CRAZY!!! AS MUCH AS I WANT TO EAT RIGHT NOW SITTING HERE WRITING THIS, MY STOMACH IS CRAMPING AND MY APPETITE JUST GOES AWAY!
I’VE LOST MY DESIRE FOR FOOD BECAUSE OF WHAT MY BODY DOES, IT ATTACKS ME IN A HARSH WAY AND I DON’T UNDERSTAND WHY WHEN I LOVE FOOD SO VERY, VERY MUCH!!!
JUST HOW LONG CAN A PERSON LAST ON JUST COFFEE AND WATER ALONE????
NO I’M NOT ANOREXIC OR BULIMIC, NEVER HAVE BEEN NOR NEVER WOULD BE BECAUSE I DO LOVE TO EAT AND LOVE SO MANY DIFFERENT TYPES OF FOODS!
AND I WATCHED MY OLDEST GRANDDAUGHTER FIGHT WITH ANOREXIA TO THE POINT THAT WE ALMOST LOST HER!! THANK GOD WE DIDN’T AND SHE GOT HELP , GOT HERSELF WELL AND IS INTO FITNESS NOW AND TAKES VERY GOOD CARE OF HERSELF, GOES TO THE GYM AND EATS RIGHT!!! AS SHE PUT IT, SHE HAS TO DEAL WITH ED EVER DAY! ED IS SHORT FOR EATING DISORDER, BUT SHE EATS ANYTHING SHE WANTS, JUST WITHIN MODERATION! I’M VERY PROUD OF HER!

I’M JUST REALLY SCARED, BECAUSE I KNOW AFTER A WHILE YOUR BODY WILL START SHUTTING DOWN AND I DON’T WANT THAT TO HAPPEN TO ME BEFORE THEY DO SOMETHING OR FIND OUT WHATS WRONG!!!!!!

Autumn, we are so, so sorry to hear you’re going through this really frustrating time with your health.

We agree with your doctor that making a change in your diet is the place to start – but we think you should try a healing diet like SCD or AIP. These diets “reset” your gut and give you a chance to heal while also helping you identify what foods may be causing a problem.

A diet like SCD is inexpensive to follow, as well.

You can start here, with our free quick start guide: https://healthygut.com/scd-quick-start-guide/

We’re here to support you as you get started – all of us on the team have been where you are now and we would love to help you start feeling better. If you ever have questions or need support, email us at support@scdlifestyle.com

What I was told would stop happening over the course of the next year has now become a monster that won’t let me go. That is, I began having severe diarrhea and intolerance to many foods. It comes and goes. Sometimes I can eat pizza and be fine…and sometimes I eat pizza (the pizza example is entirely interchangeable with any random food) and I have to sprint to the bathroom with the worst stomach cramps and nausea I’ve ever had. I noticed that even drinking a sip of any liquid (it doesn’t have to be a glass, just a sip) in the morning or when I wake up at any time will cause me to suddenly have severe stomach cramps and I’l have to run to the bathroom with severe diarrhea. This is often accompanied by intense fatigue. I’ll have the worst diarrhea and if I don’t feel like I have to go back to sleep I’ll sometimes feel like I’m on the border of passing out entirely. I’ve always slept a lot, but it’s to the point that over the last five years it’s become utterly debilitating. Sometimes I’ll go to work and then suddenly it takes over and I feel like instead I just desperately need to go back to sleep. So, of course, it’s started to take a turn for the worse yet again. I recently had a bout of diverticulitis, which I never thought possible for myself, but there I am getting an MRI and an ultrasound and my baffled doctor is telling me that “you have the gut of a 50 year old man”. I go to a budget-based clinic and the doctor I see there just seems to write me off as overweight and after trying to thoroughly explain these things to him he just says “Yeah you might have IBS” and tells me to go on the Mediterranean Diet. Thanks, doc. He gave me a medication to take before eating that didn’t help at all. The doctor at the ER seems to think I have Crohn’s disease. I have no idea what to do anymore and I realize now as my Medicaid is about to expire that I should have made an appointment with a gastroenterologist as quickly as I could.

Sorry the rant. I just need someone to vent to…

Hi Kelly – that is a pretty complicated question! If you’re having symptoms frequently, but not daily, my best guess would be that you’re resting to some foods you’re eating, and on days you don’t have symptoms, you’re not eating those foods.

Luckily, it is easy to find out what those foods are using an elimination and reintroduction diet like SCD – it also helps your gut heal so you can tolerate more foods.

The symptoms happen frequently, but not necessarily daily. To help me find a starting point, are any of these causes occasional, but not daily? I want to rule out anything that would cause this daily since I don’t have the problem daily. Thanks!

Hi Barnie, thanks for reaching out to us here! We’re really sorry your symptoms have gotten so bad.

We suggest you start by addressing your diet, as that is the real foundation of health 🙂

I have IBS (or so I’m told) since 1986. I use to be able to control it by elimination of trigger foods, but since the beginning of this year (after a stomach bug, treated with antibiotics) it became increasingly worse. I’m now at a critical point wereby the doctors start treating me for Crohn’s discease without any success. My colon spasm is so bad that they call it the lead pipe syndrome, with severe pain where it turns in on the left side below the bladder. My stool is really hard and at stages cause some rectal bleeding.

I used to take Scopex Co. (normally for a day or two) with great success and without IBS for 4 to 6 months. But Scopex Co. was only taken of the market in South Africa in 2014. Apparently someone in Germany died of anaphylactic shock in the 1980’s, but so does a lot of people from penicillin allergy, scalefish, nut allergy etc. Sometimes I am thinking that we are at the mercy of these pharmaceutical companies. If someting as cheap as Scopex co. and it works then there must be something worng with it, treating IBS Crohn’s with success? (http://mg.co.za/article/1997-10-17-killer-drug-is-sold-in-south-africa) The active ingredient (Dipyrone 250mg) was taken out and is now only left with Hyoscine-N and Butylbromide and marketed as Scopex, Hyospasmol, Buscopam etc. with no effect what-so-ever.

To treat Crohn’s is a very expensive protocol, and there is 5 protocol regimes of medication the last is so expensive that no Medical Aid plan will cover it. And then there is the final invasive colostomy surgery.

There is virtually no food that I can eat without reaction. Is there anyone with advice? And if, where could you find Scopex Co.

Joe, you might have a hiatus hernia. Go for a gastroscopy.

A hiatal hernia occurs when part of your stomach pushes upward through your diaphragm. Your diaphragm normally has a small opening (hiatus) through which your food tube (esophagus) passes on its way to connect to your stomach. The stomach can push up through this opening and cause a hiatal hernia.

In most cases, a small hiatal hernia doesn’t cause problems, and you may never know you have a hiatal hernia unless your doctor discovers it when checking for another condition.

But a large hiatal hernia can allow food and acid to back up into your esophagus, leading to heartburn. Self-care measures or medications can usually relieve these symptoms, although a very large hiatal hernia sometimes requires surgery. (Nissen procedure)

I had my hernia repaired in 1999 and never had heartburn again. However you would not be able to vomit ever again, which is not good, specially if you have a stomach bug, because your body’s first defence is to vomit to get rid of the bug.

But on the flipside of the coin, an untreated haitus can cause esophagus cancer if untreated.

You also should check your diet to control the diarrhea. To much fatty foods trigger the gallbladder and in return might cause diarrhea.

I’m not a GP and only speaks out of personal experience.

Hi Judy – I’m so sorry you’re going through this.

Eating the foods you can tolerate is so important when you have IBS, and eating right can control your symptoms 100%. However, it’s hard to know what to eat when everything seems to make you sick.

The SCD diet can heal your gut and help you figure out your “food safe zone” so you don’t have embarrassing flare-ups.

P.S. we’re glad to hear you’re going back to your doctor – it is always good idea to have a check-up when your symptoms change drastically

My town water has fluorides – I stop drinking it and went to bottle water.
Maybe the fluorides are killing the good and the bad. I started taking probiotics to replace what was killed off. It seems to work.

It took me from having to go to the bathroom over ten times a day to around 3. The biggest improvement is stomach pain and cramping. When I use cannabis in the evening it is similar to taking an antacid when you have heartburn. It provides immediate relief.

I’m probably just treating the symptoms and not the problem, but it does help immensely. And it’s not psychosomatic. If I stop using cannabis for a few days my IBS comes back full force with a vengeance.

Obviously medical cannabis is not legal everywhere, bit if it is I do strongly recommend it to help treat symptoms.

Hi Sherry – thanks for contributing your experiences!

Food can definitely be a tirgger for IBS-D, but for some people no amount of elimination/special preparation etc. of food is enough to alleviate symptoms – sometimes it is more than just food!

That’s why we advocate a customized healing path for each person – no two people are the same!

Daniel Try a Vegan Diet. I’ve had much success with it…..if I stray the IBS D AND C returns with a vengeance. Sometimes I can eat chicken without problems test meats out and find out which ones you can handle and which ones you can’t it’s in your best interest to stay away from hard cheese and egg yolk and milk at all costs. Egg yolk= gas and the runs milk= gas and the runs hard cheeses= gas and the runs feta is a good cheese it’s made from goat goat cheese doesn’t seem to bother me at all. Just some recommendations from someone who’s been there. Hope it helps some. And Good Luck!
