@ Sherry, thanks for your insights. It’s so hard to do what you are doing, I admire your strength. Robb Wolf, one of the Paleo guru’s, still can’t get his mom to do the Paleo diet even though she suffers from multiple autoimmmune issues! It’s so hard with family, the more you try to help the more they tend to push away. You said it exactly, just keep gathering info, cooking SCD food, and wait for him to be ready. Until he is ready to take control, it’s going to be a tough battle. Eventually the symptoms end up getting people to a breaking point where they have had enough – and the diet is always there waiting.

@ Tiffany – Thanks for the comments! Great success story – if you ever want to share it as a blog post contact us… they always help a lot of people. It’s so cool that you didn’t have any excuses in the beginning, sounds like you really were in between a rock and a hard place and had to make a decision, and you took control and never gave it back! Spread the word – this diet works… even though you had a couple little tweaks for your body, it works.

@ Dylan,

Wow, great list of insights! Thanks for doing that man – I learned a lot. Your insights about the medical profession is dead on, it’s really hard to trust much because of the money talking in so many cases. It’s not always the case, but seems like it is most of the time. Cheating is a tough challange, but the fact that you have committed to a year should help that a little. I think the biggest thing about cheating is if it does occurr, what are you doing about once it’s over? Are you going to move and and go back to the diet or are you going to keep saying, “well I cheated last night so I might at well cheat again for breakfast, then lunch, etc.”.

I would love to see some money get attributed to some legit studies into this diet, or diets like it, to really get some solid evidence of it’s effectiveness. I don’t see it happening anytime soon since “eating high-fat, low carb” is not a pill that any pharma can sell us. In our experience, it seems that it works for most people if they just work on tweaking the diet to custom fit it for their specific conditions. It takes some time – but once you start to get things to click it just keeps getting better and better.

Thanks for taking the time to send that in – keep questioning everything and working to take control!

By: Sherry https://healthygut.com/i-dont-have-time-to-start-the-scd-diet/#comment-16333 http://scdlifestyle.com/?p=894#comment-16333 I am the mother of a 23-year-old son with UC. He was diagnosed 3 yrs ago and while he was still in the hospital my sister was rearching alternative treatments to all the drugs and mailed BTVC to me immediately. We dove into the diet as soon as he was out of the hospital but it was all so new that we gave up rather quickly for many of the above mentioned reasons…it was too difficult, too much time, etc. Since that time it has been a struggle. Guess my son is not ready to take charge of his health yet and chooses to believe the doctors with years of medical school rather than people who actually suffer from the disease and have had made changes in their lives thru the SCD diet.

As a parent I am continuing to gather information, try new recipes, and cook the SCD way in hopes that when he does turn that corner I will be ready to support him 1000%.

I read about it on the CCFA forum that one person had success with it and ironically my aunt had heard about it too and ordered me the book before I even told her about it. I was in the worst flare that I had had to date after having my daughter. I literally was sleep deprived from having an infant and having to wake up with my flare. I was desperate. The doctors were ready to put me on even more meds. I had been gluten free for 5 years already because I realized it was some grains that I had reactions to. Once I read the book, the science made sense and I was ready to take control back. I mean, it was eiter a healthy diet or more drugs. I talked to my husband and he seemed onboard though I know he had his doubts. I did not do the starter diet but I do recommend that people do do it. Although, I was already do an organic chicken broth at the time of my flare..I just started adding plain beef patties and cooked veggies in first. I also started s.boulardii after the 3rd week. I will never look back. It was the best decision I ever made. I’ve never felt better in my life! And though healing is a process, I’ve never thought about stopping the diet. I just say, seize the day! Take back your health and stop the excuses..it’s your body and you do have control!

By: Dylan https://healthygut.com/i-dont-have-time-to-start-the-scd-diet/#comment-16322 http://scdlifestyle.com/?p=894#comment-16322 I think what I remember what kept me from not trying to before was 5 things I can think of right now. Of course I am not validating any of these statements now, they are just some ideas that came into my mind. I obviously rejected any of them from stopping me from starting in the end, and I got your ebook and started the diet anyways and will continue as long as it takes up to probably 1 year. If it doesn’t work for me after a year, then I know I am probably screwed and the doctor’s theory that it is “incurable” may be true after all. (I tried the badbugs.org antibiotic combo before too and it worked for about 10 days returning normal stools, but after that everything went back. I later tried the same combo again about 4 months later and I almost died as I could not handle furoxone like I could the first time I used it. The second time I tried it I couldn’t even go one day before I was in so much abdominal pain I thought I was going to die. I will never try furoxone ever again in my life).

In Feb 2011 it will be 2 years since my UC symptoms started. I started the diet the first time around the first of october 2010 after getting your ebook. Here are the ideas that I think I had before starting.

1) The diet seems too complicated and contradictory in what quotes I have seen about it, so it doesn’t make sense to me to waste time trying some contradictory vague unproven diet as there are a thousand diets out there, and why was this one going to be much different.

2) I don’t want to waste time reading a long book. Actually I have still been too lazy to read through the whole book yet. I am very lazy when it comes to reading text books.

3) If it worked why was I not reading much about any proof of its value anywhere despite there being hundreds of thousands of people in north America who have UC or Chrons that most likely have tried it to some extent?

4) If it works why wasn’t the medical profession accepting ANY validity to it in terms of relevance to any diet changing anything related to UC at all?
(I examined this problem a lot and came to my conclusion that doctors are not much more then salesmen for the pharmaceutical companies and have billions of dollars on the line including their medical licenses if they say anything which is not an accepted view among their colleges. Also no food based cure would make anyone money as drugs do, so even if it did work it would be almost impossible to find medical trials that proved it worked because medical trials have to be funded, and nothing is funded unless there are patented drugs and possible income from those patented drugs which could come in the future).

5) Diet is too complicated to figure out and it is too hard to find solid people who know what they are talking about relating to it who have cured themselves and can give specific details to follow.

6) I am probably too weak to resist temptation of cheating on occasion, and don’t want to have to start over all over again any time I cheat. In other words what little I understood about the guidelines seemed too hard to be consistent in obeying as I really love bread and soy and rice. I miss them so much now too but I must endure and resist a while longer as I want to live a long life and recover.
